Relationships are messy. Working through the mess strengthens relationships. The suggestions below for these common scenarios come from young people and volunteers within Thread.
Example:
The Head of Family is not currently able to fulfill their duty as the coach to Family Members or to coordinate the Thread Family for whatever reason. The Thread Family seems to be struggling with knowing what to do next and/or you (GrandParent) are finding yourself providing them with too much direct support to care for your other Heads of Family - what can you do next?
Potential Cause:
They do not understand the expectations of the role and/or how to carry out their responsibilities.
Try This:
- Talk to Head of Family and review their role (HOF, FM) to see where there may be gaps and work with them to jointly plan a new course of action.
- Encourage them to attend Monthly Leadership meetings, the annual leadership retreat, or to connect with other thriving Heads of Family to help them understand the importance of the role they play in the community.
Why?
The willingness to fail forward is a very important part of building relationships within Thread. By explaining the Head of Family’s role and allowing him/her to share his/her expectations and understanding, you both give and receive constructive feedback which makes space for joint problem-solving.
