Example:

Programming through Thread gives you a great opportunity to strengthen your relationships outside of threadHOURS, but the young person is not attending and that may be limiting your ability to connect and build a personal relationship-what can you do next?

Potential Cause:

Young person may not see the purpose or value of attending the non-threadHOURS programming (such as FAFSA workshops or Mock Interviews, etc.)

Try This:

  • Reach out to the young person to learn why they aren't interested in the programming.
  • Take the initiative to meet the young person in a place they are interested in. Ask their opinion about where to meet.  Maybe do this a few times before beginning to push other programming.  Eventually, address the situation head on.
  • Connect with other Family Members to learn their perspective about why the young person isn't attending other spaces.

Why?

It is important to meet people where they are when building/strengthening a relationship. You model treating relationships as wealth by taking the initiative to meet the young person and problem solving with him/her at his/her pace.
