Ask Coaching Questions |
Seek Clarity:
- Have you received a notice in the mail? From whom?
- What has been stated as a consequence of not paying?
- What deadline has been given? By whom?
- Review the bill carefully - does it line up with the care you received?
- What’s the minimum you can pay by your deadline to avoid the consequence?
- Have you talked to the ambulance company about your situation?
Get to the Root:
Not all medical emergencies can be prevented but some can…
-
- Do you have Health Insurance?
- Do you have a Primary Care Provider?
- Do you get regular check ups?
- Do you feel comfortable calling your PCP’s office when you’re sick or have a minor injury?
Ask About Options:
- How much do you think you could realistically afford right now? Each month?
- Who have you asked for help?
- What have you tried so far?
- Have you been in this situation before? If so, how did you handle it?
- Do you know anyone who has been in this situation before? If so, how did you handle it?
- Do you have any friends or family who could lend you money?
- Have you tried to find any organizations that could help?
- Have you tried talking with the doctor’s office, clinic, or hospital to explain your situation?
Take Steps to Advocate |
-
If the bill is correct
- If you qualify and you don’t already receive it, apply for Medicaid immediately. This may help you with requests for financial assistance from the hospital. If you need help with an application call….
- Call the billing department at the hospital and ask for a payment plan.
- They will likely ask for proof of your income/assets.
If you suspect the bill is incorrect OR are unsure:
- Call the hospital billing department to get clarity and/or to request for a correction.
- If you don’t get the answers/response you need then call the Maryland Health Education and Advocacy Unit at 410-528-1840 or submit a complaint online
- If you don’t get a response in a timely manner, reach out to the elected officials who represent the area in which you live.
