Ask Coaching Questions

Seek Clarity:

  1. Have you received a notice in the mail? From whom?
  2. What has been stated as a consequence of not paying?
  3. What deadline has been given? By whom?
  4. Review the bill carefully - does it line up with the care you received?
  5. What’s the minimum you can pay by your deadline to avoid the consequence?
  6. Have you talked to the ambulance company about your situation?

Get to the Root:

Not all medical emergencies can be prevented but some can…

  1.
    1. Do you have Health Insurance?
    2. Do you have a Primary Care Provider?
    3. Do you get regular check ups?
    4. Do you feel comfortable calling your PCP’s office when you’re sick or have a minor injury?

Ask About Options:

  1. How much do you think you could realistically afford right now? Each month?
  2. Who have you asked for help?
  3. What have you tried so far?
  4. Have you had an ambulance bill before? If so, how did you handle it?
  5. Do you know anyone who has had an ambulance bill before? If so, how did you handle it?
  6. Do you have any friends or family who could lend you money?
  7. Have you tried to find any organizations that could help?
  8. Have you tried talking with the ambulance company to explain your situation?

Take Steps to Advocate

2.png
  1. Call the billing department at the ambulance company and ask for the bill to be forgiven.
  2. They will likely ask for proof of your income/assets.
  3. If you agree you are unable to pay you will either forgive or reduce your bill
  4. If you reduce your bill you can ask for a payment plan that you can afford (even $10-$15/month)

**Keep track of who you talk to, what you said, and the dates of the call
