Ask Coaching Questions |
Seek Clarity:
- What hospital is the bill from?
- Review the bill carefully - does it line up with the care you received?
- Do you have health insurance? If so - what is your insurance?
- What is your household income?
Get to the Root:
Not all medical emergencies can be prevented but some can…
-
- Do you have Health Insurance?
- Do you have a Primary Care Provider?
- Do you get regular check ups?
- Do you feel comfortable calling your PCP’s office when you’re sick or have a minor injury?
Ask About Options:
- How much can you afford to spend on your bill this month?
- Who have you asked for help?
- What have you tried so far?
- Have you been in this situation before? If so, how did you handle it?
- Do you know anyone who has been in this situation before? If so, how did you handle it?
- Do you have any friends or family who could lend you money to cover your bill this month?
Take Steps to Advocate |
- Call the billing department at the hospital and ask for the bill to be forgiven.
- They will likely ask for proof of your income/assets.
- If you agree you are unable to pay you will either forgive or reduce your bill
- If you reduce your bill you can ask for a payment plan that you can afford (even $10-$15/month)
- Ask for a patient advocate at the hospital to help you understand your bill and navigate the conversation with the billing department
**Keep track of who you talk to, what you said, and the dates of the call
