Well, that depends on which year the young person is in Thread. Remember, that young people are in Thread for 10 years and there are different goals for volunteers within each of those years.
In General, Thread has 3 goals for the entire community:
- Young person obtains a high school diploma through school graduation or GED completion
- Young person obtains a post-high school academic or professional degree/certification that advances their earning potential
- All members of a Thread Family are equipped with a diverse set of deep relationships that support them in achieving their individual goals
Specific Volunteer Goals By Young Person's Year in Thread

Year 1 (main focus = building strong relationships)
- Goal 1: Build trust and routine within your Thread Family (that’s you, your Thread student and your other Family Member volunteers!)
- Goal 2: Support consistent attendance and enrollment at site high school by alleviating barriers to attendance and preventing school transfer
- Goal 3: Facilitate consistent presence at threadHOURS by ensuring the student and at least one volunteer attend once per week

Years 2-3 (main focus = getting on track to graduate high school)
- Goal 1: Maintain trusting relationships within your Thread Family (that’s you, your Thread student and your other Family Member volunteers!)
- Goal 2: Ensure consistent attendance at school and completion of required credits: (10/21 after 10th grade, 15/21 after 11th grade)
- Goal 3: Facilitate participation in key Thread programming to explore your Young Person’s interest in one of the five post-high school pathways:(i) earning 4-year degree, (ii) earning 2-year degree, (iii) completing trade/apprenticeship certification, (iv) engaging in entrepreneurship, (v) going straight to workforce

Year 4 (main focus = transitioning to Post High School)
- Goal 1: Maintain trusting relationships within your Thread Family (that’s you, your Thread student and your other Family Member volunteers!)
- Goal 2: Ensure completion of high school or path towards future completion
- Goal 3: Explore and decide on post-high school pathway, completing necessary pre-steps along the way

Years 5-10 (main focus = achieving personal long-term goals)
- Goal 1: Build trust with your blended Thread Family (that’s you, the young adults in your Family, and the other Family Member volunteers)
- Goal 2: Ensure young person is on track to complete one of the following post-high school pathways: (i) earning 4-year degree, (ii) earning 2-year degree, (iii) completing trade/apprenticeship certification, (iv) engaging in entrepreneurship, (v) going straight to workforce
- Goal 3: Young person self-reports positive growth towards individual goals
