When you’re helping a young person through a hard time, start by listening and staying calm. You can help a young person feel comfortable to express their safely and clearly. If the situation gets unsafe, confusing, or beyond your ability, you have support! Don’t try to handle everything alone and reach out to your community manager or other Thread staff for support.
Establishing trust is important. Meet the person where they are at. The more you can help the person feel safe and supported, the easier it will become to have honest conversations.

Thread Resources to Support Volunteers (located under Volunteer Tools in the Thread Guide):
- What do I do if I suspect abuse or neglect?
- What are considered unacceptable activities?
- How do I report something unsafe?
- What is our confidentiality policy?
- What should I do if a family member and a young person are not getting along?
- What should I do if a young person is shy or not interested in connecting with me?
You are not in this alone!
- Remember that young people may see you as an easy fix - may approach you first about a situation they are dealing with and not seek other resources.
- If you are dealing with a difficult situation with a young person, be open with your community manager about situations and seek guidance. For situations where someone may be at risk, contact your Community Manager or HR (hr@thread.org) immediately for guidance, support, and next steps.
