Core Competencies
Since our beginning in 2003, we have worked with young people, volunteers, staff & collaborators to create 4 Core Competencies with 16 defining statements. These are the norms that frame the relationships in our community because they reflect the diverse needs of our multi-identity community.
They outline how we show up in all of our relationships when we are at our best. They also represent how we aspire to act, and so may be describing our areas for growth.
Show all the Way Up
- Be physically and authentically present
- Recognize your own inherent value
- Understand, embody, and communicate that you understand that you have room for growth
- Challenge yourself and push through discomfort to connect deeply with others
Fail Forward
- Be willing to engage in an iterative change process, appreciating the small wins that ocur on the journey
- Give and receive feedback (tell the truth with kindness, call a thing a thing)
- Utilize feedback to grow
- Share with others how you are changing and how you have changed
Treat Relationships as Wealth
- Recognize the inherent value of ALL people, and that we all bring something to the table
- Understand that your ability to thrive is bound up in others' ability to thrive
- Meet ALL people where they are
- Intentionally build relationships across lines of difference
Learn from All Voices
